Most global stocks rally on speculation the Fed will continue stimulus measures ahead of today's FOMC announcement; Mar S&Ps up +5.50; Dollar index slides to a 2-1/2 month low.‏

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Overnight Developments

  • Global stocks are trading higher with the European Euro Stoxx 50 index up +1.00% and March S&Ps up +5.50 points. The dollar index slid to a 2-1/2 month low and most commodities gained on speculation the Fed will keep stimulus measures intact when it concludes its 2-day policy meeting today. US stock prices rose after President Obama in Tuesday night's State of the Union speech vowed to create jobs and spur growth. Treasuries weakened as stocks rallied and bund prices were also pressured after Dec German import prices surged +12.0% y/y, the fastest annual pace in 29 years. European automakers are leading stock gains with Porsche SE up over 5% after it reported unit sales in China rose 63% to a record, while Renault SA climbed 3.3% after Barclays Plc boosted its recommendation on the company. The British pound rose against the dollar after BOE policy maker Weale joined fellow policy maker Sentance in voting for a 25 bp interest rate increase this month. In th e minutes of the Jan 13 BOE policy meeting, the BOE voted 6-2-1 to maintain policy at current levels, although officials said the balance of risks to inflation had moved "upwards." England's inflation rate as a whole has exceeded the central bank's 2.0% target for more than a year and BOE Governor King forecast yesterday that the inflation rate may rise above 4.0% in the coming months due to higher commodity prices and an increase in the sales tax.

  • The Asian stock markets today closed mostly higher with Japan down -0.60%, Hong Kong +0.23%, China +1.35%, Taiwan +0.71%, Australia closed for holiday, Singapore +1.25%, South Korea +1.32%, India closed for holiday. Japanese stocks closed lower as a drop in commodity prices weakened raw materials and energy producers, while a stronger yen undercut exporters. Strong earnings results are underpinning most Asian markets as earnings have grown at 44 of the 61 companies in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index that reported results since Jan 10. In an attempt to control soaring real estate prices, China's State Council set the minimum down payment for second home purchases at 60% and Fitch Ratings warned that inflation in China could hinder Asia's economic growth and damage the ratings outlook for countries in the region this year as China battles "hot money inflows" and consumer prices that are near multi-year highs.

Overnight U.S. Stock News

  • March S&Ps this morning are trading up +5.50 points. The US stock market yesterday retreated after the UK economy unexpectedly shrank and several companies reported disappointing earnings but recouped most of its losses and settled mixed on speculation President Obama during his State of the Union speech on Tue night may announce plans to stimulate the economy: Dow -0.03%, S&P 500 +0.03%, Nasdaq Composite +0.06%. The Dow eked out another 2-1/2 year high. Bullish factors included (1) the larger-than-expected increase in Jan US consumer confidence which rose to its best level in 8 months (+7.3 to 60.6 versus expectations of +1.5 to 54.0), (2) the action by the IMF to raise their forecast for global economic growth this year to 4.4% from an Oct forecast of 4.2%, (3) the statement from the chairman of the US Council of Economic Advisers that President Obama would consider lowering corporate taxes as one of a variety of proposals intended to boost the economy, and (4) late-day short covering in stocks on speculation President Obama in his Tue night State of the Union Speech may announce additional stimulus measures and other plans to stimulate the economy.

  • Bearish factors for stocks included (1) carry-over weakness in European stocks after Q4 UK GDP unexpectedly contracted -0.5% q/q, (2) concerns that US housing market weakness will continue to be a drag on the economy after Nov S&P/CaseShiller composite-20 home prices fell -1.6% y/y, the biggest annual decline in 11 months, (3) weaker-than-expected earnings results from American Express, Johnson & Johnson and 3M, (4) weakness in raw-material and energy producers as a strong dollar prompted widespread commodity declines, and (5) renewed European sovereign-debt concerns after Moody's Investors Service warned that Spain's banks may need as much as 89 billion euros in a stressed case scenario.

  • Keynote (KEYN) surged 19% in pre-market trading after the company late yesterday reported Q1 earnings of 32 cents a share, almost double analysts' estimates of 17 cents a share.

  • Juniper Networks (JNPR) climbed 2.6% in pre-market trading after the second-largest US maker of networking equipment said profitability will improve this year as sales growth from acquisitions and new produts outpaces increases in R&D costs.

Today's Market Focus

  • March 10-year T-notes this morning are trading down -10 ticks. T-note prices yesterday erased an early rally after Jan US consumer confidence rose to an 8-month high but then rallied into the close on speculation President Obama will propose a 5-year freeze on non-security discretionary spending: TYH11 +22, FVH11 +12, EDM11 +0.5. Bullish factors included (1) carry-over support from a rally in European government bonds which gained after Q4 UK GDP unexpectedly contracted, (2) the Fed's action to purchase $7.72 billion of Treasuries as part of its QE2 asset-purchase program, (3) a statement from an Obama administration official who said that President Obama will propose in his State of the Union speech Tuesday night a 5-year freeze on non-security discretionary spending, and (4) strong demand for the Treasury's $35 billion 2-year T-note auction that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 3.47, compared with the 12-auction average of 3.33. Bearish factors included (1) the large r-than-expected increase in Jan US consumer confidence which rose to its best level in 8 months (+7.3 to 60.6 versus expectations of +1.5 to 54.0), and (2) supply pressures ahead of the Treasury's $35 billion 5-year T-note auction on Wed.

  • The dollar index this morning is lower and at a 2-1/2 month low with the dollar/yen -0.07 yen and the euro/dollar +0.22 cents. The dollar index moved higher early yesterday but finished little changed after Treasury yields fell on speculation President Obama will propose a 5-year freeze on non-security discretionary spending: Dollar Index -0.048, USDJPY -0.276, EURUSD +0.00443. Bullish factors included (1) a slump in the British pound to a 1-1/2 week low against the dollar after Q4 UK GDP unexpectedly contracted, (2) the jump in Jan US consumer confidence to an 8-month high, and (3) renewed European sovereign-debt concerns after Moody's Investors Service warned that Spain's banks may need as much as 89 billion euros in a stressed case scenario. Bearish factors for the dollar included (1) reduced safe-haven demand for the dollar after the IMF raised their forecast for global economic growth this year to 4.4% from an Oct forecast of 4.2%, (2) the unexpected increase in Feb German GfK consumer confidence which climbed to a 3-year high and is euro supportive, and (3) the 9 bp drop in the 10-year T-note yield on speculation President Obama will propose a 5-year freeze on non-security discretionary spending, which weakened the dollar's interest rate differentials.

  • March crude oil prices this morning are trading up +69 cents a barrel and March gasoline is +2.74 cents per gallon. Crude oil and gasoline prices weakened yesterday after England’s Q4 GDP unexpectedly contracted: CLH11 -1.68, RBH11 -6.73. Mar crude sank to a 1-3/4 month low and Mar gasoline fell to a 3-week low. Bearish factors included (1) the unexpected decline in Q4 UK GDP, which signals a weak economy and energy demand, and (2) the outlook for increases in weekly crude oil and gasoline supplies when the DOE reports weekly inventories on Wed. Bullish factors included (1) the larger-than-expected increase in Jan US consumer confidence to its best level in 8 months, which may lead to improved consumer spending and fuel demand, and (2) the unexpected increase in the Feb German GfK consumer confidence survey to a 3-year high, which may also lead to increased fuel demand. Expectations for Wednesday's weekly inventory report from the DOE are for crude oil stockpiles to increase +1.35 million bbl, gasoline supplies to rise 2.5 million bbl, distillate inventories to fall -500,000 bbl and the refinery capacity rate to remain unchanged at 83.0%.
